Bucksport's Art Gallery
The town of Bucksport, Maine has long been associated with a paper mill. Originally known as the Maine Seaboard Paper Co., the mill went through numerous name changes and owners. In its final eight years, it was called the Verso Paper Mill. Its closure in 2014, after 84 years of operation, had a deep impact on this community. But Mainers aren't afraid of hard work or a challenge so the citizens of this Hancock County town dedicated themselves to redeveloping their identity.
One of those new investments is a beautiful art gallery. Located at 86 Main Street, the Lighthouse Gallery sits alongside the Penobscot River. Once inside, the visitor can clearly see both Fort Knox and the Penobscot Narrows Bridge through the expansive windows. The view is striking and enviable for any business.
The owner and sole employee of this venture is Kathryn James. She is warm and cheerful, and the gallery is bright and inviting. The entire space provides an uplifting environment in which to browse.
At the time of my visit in January 2022, there were 73 artists represented in the gallery. The items displayed for purchase cover an array of art forms, including paintings, paper art, photography, graphic art, pottery, woodworking, fiber arts, jewelry, books, and more...even wind chime creations. Many of the artists are local to the state, and much of the art is centered on Maine themes and scenes. Some of the artists even offer on-site classes in the gallery's picturesque setting.
It is not a secret that the beauty of our state provides endless inspiration for artistic expression. Artists began flocking to Maine in the mid-19th century to try to capture its wonder. Creative individuals—both those unknown to the public and others with familiar names—have been making the trek ever since. Some of them decide they don't want to leave.
Kathryn, owner of the Lighthouse Gallery, is one of those. Originally from New York, she learned watercolor painting from mentor Paul Elliot who had a nearby studio in her town. Paul had been taught by a master artist whose name some of you may know: John Pike. Kathryn developed remarkable skill in showing detail in her paintings. Early in her years as an artist, she came to Maine on a week-long painting trip in Kennebunkport. She still vividly recalls her first impression of the state: "I fell in love and said, 'This is my home. This is where I wanted to be.'"
It took some decades before this dream was realized, but in 2001 she and her husband Roger retired and bought a summer home in Bucksport. They enjoyed a close and strong relationship with each other. His passing in 2015 left Kathryn wondering what was next for her. Though she lost her husband, she retained her strong faith as a Christian. As it was (and is) her practice, she prayed for direction and sensed that God wanted her to pursue the purchase of a building along the waterfront. This felt out of Kathryn's field of expertise, but she took one step at a time. When the right place was located, an unexpected inheritance provided nearly the exact amount that was required for the purchase. It was an unmistakeable confirmation that she was on the right path.
In the years since, the property has been through several transitions. Sixteen months of transformative renovation work was accomplished. Presently the gallery is open year-round—two days in the winter and four in the summer. It is easy to locate and has convenient parking. Other attractions, including places to eat and drink, are a short stroll away. Check the gallery’s website for updated hours the next time you are in the area.
Kathryn admits that she never envisioned owning a gallery, but has found great joy in supporting local artists and celebrating the beauty of creation. Without question, the town is brighter and better for her investment. Pass the word along: Bucksport is a worthwhile destination for lovers of Maine art.
